Mass Berkhatan 2016
The children from Jamiyah Singapore’s pool of beneficiaries were among the 70 children present for the Mass Circumcision organised by the Muslim Healthcare Professionals Association (MHPA), with Jamiyah Singapore and the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS).
The event that was held at Al-Malik Faisal Hall, Jamiyah Singapore, and level 5 of the building, saw the participation of 12 doctors and 70 volunteers that included nurses, medical and nursing students.
“My role is to bring the children to the surgery area. I comfort them by playing small games like ‘Pepsi cola’, ‘Chopsticks’,” said 19-year-old Amirzeb S/O Aurangzeb, who is a volunteer and also a first year Medical student at the National University of Singapore (NUS)
He continued, “As volunteers we have to adapt to the situation, like for the boys, sometimes while waiting for their turn, they can hear the surgery going on for the other boys, so I’ll bring them to a corner so that they can’t hear or see anything that wil l scare them.”
This is the 6th year that MHPA is running the Mass Circumcision with Jamiyah and MUIS, and this year, parents who are waiting for their sons get the opportunity to go through the free health screening.
“We wanted to create an awareness for parents about health and an approach towards healthy living. In Islam it is encouraged to look after the wellbeing of one’s self so we thought this would be a good platform.” explained Mohd Ali Bin Kamal Batcha, a volunteer with MHPA, who is also heading the occasion, as part of the organisation’s Community Outreach Programme.
60-year-old Mohd Razali Ajmain whose grandson was in line for the surgery, benefitted from the free health screening.
“It’s good that they provide this service. It is for our own health, afterall.” said Razali.
